Earlier only simple mental operations needed to understand a religious teaching, later think about it in more complex ways. Concrete to abstract: tabula rasa (behaviourism) Child is empty vessel into which adults deposit ideas, habits, prejudices, meanings. Nature of interaction between child and caregiver leaves emotional and safety needs met/unmet, leaves schemas in child"s mind. Unfulfilled needs can affect one"s tendency towards religiousness: developing interactive agent. Child is interdependent agent who develops and learns but also makes meanings that are unique to them. Meanings children learn to see in symbols, feelings they learn to attach to them, behaviours they learn to associate with them. Learning words, first concrete (experienced) and literal meanings, then abstract rules and figurative meaning. God = big old person in the sky. Prayer = tool to be used to produce desired outcome: fairytale stage (3-6 years) - god similar to fantastical creatures. Hard to separate fantasy and reality: realistic stage (7-12 years)
