Document Summary

Soc 1020: chapter 15 aging and the elderly. The number of elderly people (men and women aged 65 and older) is increasing more than twice as fast as the population as a whole. Over the past century, the life expectancy of canadians has doubled while the average number of children being born has declined by half; the result is an aging population. Two factors have prompted this trend: the baby boom that began in the late 1940s, this was followed by a steep decline after 1965. Children in rural environments are an economic asset, while in industrial areas, they are more of an economic burden. Children no longer add to a family"s financial well-being, and are instead a major expense. As women achieve higher education and work outside the home, they choose to have fewer children. Medical advances have virtually eliminated infectious diseases that used to kill young people.
