Latter half of the 19th century, people start organizing the context in which children grew up. Goal: kids to become productive adults in rapidly expanding capitalist economies. To a critical theorist: this is a social control response -- it is developed to deal with a social problem. Sports would teach girls how to be good wives, mothers etc. (domestic skills) Exception to this context -- the clergy in rural quebec. Girls interests ignored until 1970s: in the 1980s, girls had almost as many opportunities as boys -- participation rate still low. As housing needs increased during the baby boom, so did the development of recreation facilities. 4 assumptions that dominates children"s organized sports (1970s; smith) Children play sports to entertain adults: kids want their parents at every game - feel neglected if not ( good parents go, as they get older this becomes less important, feel embarrassed when their parents yell stuff.
