As part of the scientific method, we move from operationalization of key concepts (definitions), to theories, to hypotheses, to testing of those theories/hypotheses. There are a variety of ways to theorize about the role of terrorism and related phenomena in society. Behavioral (okay, behavioural): focuses on terrorism as an identifiable and individual behavior. How they are developed, how they change over time, etc. Social: focuses on terrorism as an inherently social phenomena vis-a -vis construction, development, activities, and responses. Governmentality (next week): how we govern the problem that is terrorism. Aim to understand the behaviours, thoughts, and feelings that drive people to engage in terrorist activities. Most scholarly research in the field of terrorism studies focuses on the individual psychological aspect of terrorist activities: Psychology of terrorism (i. e. , work of john horgan) Heavily reliant on case studies and experiments.
