Hookups and Hang-Ups
By Orenstein
• Media portrays girls as only being interested in relationships – not the hookup culture
o While this is not always the case
• Hookups can be liberating for girls, not just boys
• Today, relationships normally start with a non-committed sexual contact
• “Hookup” is very ambiguous
o It can mean kissing, oral sex, sex, anal sex, etc.
• There is also different types of hook ups – one time, repeated, exclusive, “friends with
benefits”
• The whole premise behind a hookup is there is no emotion
• People think their peers are having more sex than they actually are
o Perhaps this is because of media influence?
o E.g. Pretty Little Liars or Grey’s Anatomy
• People also think young adults prefer hookups – when in fact more prefer to go on a date
• A girls physical satisfaction in hookups tend to be secondary/afterthought
o Less likely to receive oral sex and if they do it is rarely to climax
• Girls feel pressured from boyfriends to “achieve” climax
o This is especially when the girls were inexperienced
• Some argue that is takes time for boys to understand the girls bodies
• Boys are less interested in satisfying a hookup rather than a girlfriend, whereas girls are
equally interested
• Today women are postponing marriage to focus their energy on “self-development” such
as pursuing academic, personal and professional goals
o Hookups allow them to still have an active sex life
o Women are growing independently of relationships
The Happy Hookup
• Holly example
o Throughout high school she was the “good girl”
o Planned to wait to have sex until she was in a committed relationship
o Once she entered college, the campus life quickly changed her – she joined the
hookup culture
o Talked about how she liked to show off her body and “she was proud of her
body”
o She considered herself a bad person once she had sex with someone outside of a
relationship
• A fraternity at Yale was banned because they chanted “no means yes, and yes means
anal” outside the freshmen’s dorms
• Young women are expected to repay their hosts with sex
• Alcohol is how students signal to one another that the sex they’re having is meaningless
• Girls don’t want to hookup sober because they think it would be awkward
o “Being sober makes it seem you want to be in a relationship”
