Document Summary

Sexual selection is a form of selection that focuses on the selection of individuals whose fitness is enhanced b their ability to attract and breed with a mate. One hypothesis regarding why the choosier sex, say a female, chooses a mate is the honest advertising hypothesis. This suggests that the bright colouration or other traits that are sexually selected are chosen by females because they suggest that the male displaying those traits is of high quality and has energy to spare. Another hypothesis regarding mate choice of a sexually selected trait, called the good genes hypothesis, suggests that these traits signal the presence of an advantageous gene or genes. This hypothesis postulates linkage between a favourable trait and the individual"s genes. The relationship between which sex advertises and which sex chooses is linked to parental investment in offspring. The sexual selection of males by females or females by ales is direct mate selection and is known as intersexual selection.
