Document Summary

Ec120: chapter 3 interdependence and the gains from trade. E. g. only 2 goods in this world: meat and potatoes, and only 2 people in the world: cattle rancher and a potato farmer, each of whom would like t eat both meat and potatoes. Gains from trade are most obvious if rancher can only produce only meat and farmer can product only potatoes. One scenario: rancher and farmer could choose to have nothing to do with each other but after months of eating only beef and potatoes, they will get bored of it and agree to trade with each other. Trade can allow them to enjoy greater variety. Farmer and rancher can each benefit by specializing in what he or she does best and then trading with each other. Gains from trade are less obvious when one person is better at producing. If both choose to be self-sufficient rather than trading, each consumes exactly what he or she produces.
