Document Summary

Uniform distribution/rectangular distribution: a relatively simple continuous distribution in which the same height, or f(x) is obtained over a range of values. In a uniform distribution, total area under the curve is of the length and the width of the rectangle and equals 1. Distribution lies between x values of a and b length. Area of rectangle = (length) (height) = 1. Area = (b a) (height) = 1. That"s why the distribution has a constant height of 1/(b a) equal to the product of rectangle = b a. Mean and standard deviation of a uniform distribution: Discrete distributions: probability function yields the value of the probability. Continuous distributions: probabilities are calculated by determining the area over an interval of the function no area under the curve for a single point. Area between a and b = 1 probability for any interval and b is 1.
