GG101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Ice Crystals, Fluid Parcel, Puffy Amiyumi
Document Summary
Earth"s distance from the sun allows for the 3 states of water: ice, liquid, & vapour. Water is the most common compound found on earth. Pure water is rare in nature because something is almost always dissolved in it. The polarity of water molecules explains why it dissolves many substances. Hydrogen bonding is the cause of capillarity an important component of soil-moisture processes. Without hydrogen bonding to mold molecules together in water & ice, water would be a gas at normal surface temperatures. For water to change from one state to another, heat energy must be absorbed or liberated (released) To cause a change of state, the amount of heat energy must be sufficient to affect the hydrogen bonds between molecules. The relation between water & heat is important to atmospheric processes. Heat exchanged between physical states of water provides more than 30% of energy that powers the circulation of the atmosphere.
