People think that pop culture is commercial culture (culture enjoyed by lots of people) but it is rather the culture of the people. Folk culture: cultural products & practices developed over time within a community, passed down from generations & a direct expression of the creators i. e. inuit carving. Mass culture: produced for an unknown audience dependent on media to convey its message to a large audience for max profit i. e. mtv rap vid. Ideology: process by which the set of values & beliefs that bind individuals together in a society become naturalized . 2 definitions: addiction to consumption which equates material goods to happiness, the importance of physical objects & existing conditions of life in shaping societies/historical periods. Economic system based on private ownership of means of production and distribution, geared towards profit. Culture is concerned with not just individual tastes but the political/social organization of society.
