Chapter 31: music therapy and dementia: a cognitive- Music therapy process airmed at improving state of 68 year old woman with alzheimer"s disease. Showed increase in rate of positive affect over time. Only participated in activites she felt comfortable in: singing and playing. Once the sessions finished, members remained and continued talking and commenting on therapy. Tallies of anne"s affective behaviours recorded at sessions 1, 6 and 12. Videos analyzed and number of positive and negative behaviours countered. Spontaneous positive verbal interactions with peers and mt. Improvements seemed to be transferred to other areas and activites of centre. Use of familiar, preferred music along with activites adapted to anne"s functional level helped assure her success in music activites. In turn helped her open up and feel more relaxed and secure around others. People with dementia continue to respond to and engage in music.
