PP201 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Insider Trading, Ad Hominem, Tu Quoque
Document Summary
Positive relevance the premise works to prove the conclusion. Negative relevance the premise works to disprove the conclusion. Irrelevance the premise neither proves nor disproves the conclusion. When you see a counterargument, the first thing you should ask is whether the counterargument really does counter the original argument. This fallacy occurs when someone substitutes another position for the one actually at issue. Occurs when someone misrepresents an argument while trying to counter it. A violation of the principle of charity, which requires that we interpret an argument in the most compelling way that it can be read. When you commit a straw person fallacy, you attack a similar, but weaker version of the argument. If you misinterpret your opponent, your own argument is irrelevant because you haven"t directly addressed the argument at hand. A way to draw people off topic is by making a joke. Sometimes a joke can serve as a good refutation.
