Light has properties of both a wave and a stream of photons is often referred to as the particle wave duality. The longer the wavelength, the lower the energy of the photons it contains. The shorter the wavelength, the higher the energy of photons it contains: light interacts with matter. When a photon of light hits an object: it can be reflected off the object, transmitted through the object, absorbed by the object. For the photon to serve a purpose for an organism it must be absorbed. The absorption of light occurs when the energy of the photon is transferred to an electron within a molecule.
