Endangered species: when designing programs to save species threatened with extinction, conservationists draw heavily on concepts & techniques from population ecology. Using life table data: collecting & analyzing demographic data such as age-specific survivorship & fecundity are important for saving endangered species & for other applied problems. In humans & other species with high survivorship in most age classes, rate of population growth are extremely sensitive to changes in age-specific fecundity. Life tables summarize how likely it is that individuals of each age class in a population will survive & reproduce. 3 general types of survivorship curves have been observed: high survivorship throughout life, a constant probability of dying each year of life, high mortality in juveniles followed by high survivorship in adults. The resources available to individuals are always limited, so any increase in allocation of resources to survival & competitive ability necessitates a decrease in resources allocated to reproduction.
