Document Summary

Co(cid:373)(cid:373)u(cid:374)ities: diversity of species in a biological community can be quantified in 2 ways: Species richness: count of how many species are present in given community. Species diversity weight measure that incorporates a species; relative abundance as well as its presence of absence. Larger patches of habitat contain more species than do smaller patches of habitat. Larger habitats contain more types of niches & thus support higher numbers of species. Islands in the ocean have smaller number of species than do areas of same size on continents. Role of immigration & extinction: number of species present on an island is a result of 2 events: immigration & extinction. The rates vary with number of species present on islands. Immigration rates should declines as number of species increases. Competition should prevent new species from becoming established when many species are present: extinction rates should increase as species richness increases b/c niche overlap & competition for resources are more intense.
