Criminological studies focus on male violence and have failed miserably to consider the possibility that girls and boys experience violence differently and under different circumstances. Criminology tends to focus on male activities and attributes wherever possible. Early criminological writers maintained that since women"s maternal instincts governed their emotions and actions, female criminality was rooted in their biological make-up. His view, the violent criminal had devolved and therefore constituted a societal or evolutionary regression. Believed that criminals were biological throwbacks to an earlier stage of development where people were more primitive and less highly evolved than their noncriminal counterparts. Wrote the first book on women law-breakers. Concluded female criminals were rare and showed few signs of degeneration because they had evolved less than men due to the inactive nature of their lives . Born criminals were described as ruthless, insensitive to pain and compassion and guided by their exaggerated sexuality.
