Biopsychosocial model: physical illness is caused by complex interaction of biological, psychological and sociocultural factors. 3 major killers in canada: heart disease, then cancer, then stroke. Factors increasing risk: tobacco, overweight, inactivity, stress, diet and alcohol. In past 80 years, sharp increase in heart disease, went down but is still highest. Events are made more stressful by: unpredictability/uncertainty, pressure lack of control, repeated exposure/chronicity loss and failure. Primary appraisal: initial evaluation of if an event is irrelevant/relevant but not threatening/stressful. Secondary appraisal: evaluation of coping resources and options for dealing with stress. Acute stressors are of short duration; chronic stressors have a long duration/no readily apparent time limit. Frustration: occurs in situations where attempt to pursue a goal is thwarted.
