Why do we need to belong: psychological need: a mechanism for regulating behaviour to acquire the tangible or intangible resources necessary for survival and well-being. The reward model of liking: reward model of liking: proposes that people like other people whom they associate with positive stimuli and dislike people whom they associate with negative stimuli. Transference: transference: tendency to map on, or transfer, feelings for a person who is known to someone new who resembles that person in some way, ex. women transferring feelings about her dad onto male romantic partner. Attraction to those who fulfill needs: we tend to like those who -> are similar to us, like us, and flatter us. Important aspect of attraction is the degree to which people perceive that they are similar to each other and not necessarily how similar they actually are. Similarity in perceptions: me -> beliefs about ourselves, me-share when we feel the same as others.
