Document Summary

Chapter one: the cells of the nervous system. Nervous system consists of two types of cell, neurons and glia. Neurons: receive information and transmit it to other cells: adult human approx. Membrane: a structure that separates the inside of the cell from the outside environment. Most chemicals cannot cross membrane but proteins channels control the flow of water, oxygen and sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride and other chemicals. All cells but mammal red blood cells have a nucleus. Mitochondrion: preforms metabolic activities such as providing energy for cell/ needs fuel and oxygen. Ribosomes: sites that cell syntheses new proteins. Some float freely while others are a part of the er. Endoplasmic reticulum: network of tubes that transport synthesizes proteins to other locations. Protein: building material for the cell and facilitate chemical reactions. Distinctive shape that varies greatly: neurons have long branching extensions, larger neurons have dendrites, soma (cell body), axon, and presynaptic terminals, smallest neurons don"t have axons and presynaptic terminals.
