PSYC 3140 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Mania
Document Summary
Major depressive episode: most commonly diagnosed, most severe depression, extremely depressed mood state that lasts at least two weeks and includes cognitive symptoms (feelings of worthlessness and indecisiveness) and distributed physical functions (altered sleeping patterns, significant changes in appetite and weight, or a very notable loss of energy) to the point that even the slightest activity or movement is overwhelming, accompanied by a marked general loss of interest and of the ability to experience pleasure from life, interactions with family or friends and accomplishments from school, physical changes are central to the disorder, second state is abnormally exaggerated elation, joy, or euphoria. The title can be misleading, because depression and elation may not exactly be at opposite ends of the same mood stat, in fact though related they are often relatively independent. mania: manic episodes are characterized by dysphoric features more commonly than was thought and dysphoria can be severe, bipolar symptoms have manic symptoms, racing thoughts, distractibility and agitation.
