Document Summary

This article examines the effects of rape myths on society. There have been many changes made to the sexual assault legislation in canada, but there is still the need for change in the criminal justice system. Many women in our society experienced rape, sexual assault and violence but because of negative attitudes toward women they were judged. Rape myths are prejudicial, stereotyped, or false beliefs about rape, rape victims and rapists which are widespread. It"s the belief that women are responsible for their own victimizations because they didn"t dress or behave appropriately, they had previous sexual contact with the assailant or they had bad reputations. The law agrees that rape is a crime of sexual passion, sexual offenders are mentally ill, and women who have been raped are less desirable. This false beliefs were used to discount sexual complains and to determine the case as convictable.
