Bison: focus of subsistence throughout all of precontact era. The american bison (bison bison) lives only in north america, while the two main buffalo species reside in africa and asia. Farming practiced in river valleys over the last 1,000 years. Horses, acquired from spanish began to be used by some plains groups in the 1700s. Over the next 100 years many groups living on the margins of the. The classic plains equestrian cultures existed between ad 1800 and 1870. Bison were hunted prior to the introduction of the horse in the 18th century, but not in as great of quantities. Bison were herded and stampeded over cliffs. Bison were used for meat, skins, and sinews for bows. We can study this site and know what direction the wind was blowing when they chased the bison over this cliff. Stayed far away so bison would not smell them (bison have terrible vision, great sense of smell)
