Everything is rooted in historical cultural context: this defines what is normal or abnormal. Abnormal behavior usually includes the following three characteristics: cultural inappropriateness, behavior seems at odds with cultural expectations of appropriateness and propriety, both the behavior itself and the context in which the behavior is displayed is important. It can be deemed criminal: accompanied by subjective distress, involves psychological disability or impairment, maladjusted-not coping well, not doing things the way people expect. Cultural relativity: try to understand another person"s cultural perspective. Continuum abnormality: means its on a scale and degree caliber. Psych disability: unable to function adequately in social roles, can be considered to be analogous to a physical disability- and application of disease model of abnormal behavior. Diagnostic reliability: if you get same diagnosis from differ therapists. Paradigm- models w theories, framework/lenses etc: dominant paradigm in psych is the quantitative method. Organic view: mental illness is rooted in biology, psychiatrist trained in this.
