Social stratification: the hierarchical ranking of categories of people within society, not all these categories are treated equally. Sociological imagination: the recognition that our personal experiences are, in large part, shaped by forces within the larger society. Gender socialization: teaching the cultural norms that go along with the given child"s gender, done with toys, in schools and by parents. Sex: biological differences between men and women. Gender: culturally and socially differences between males and females found in meanings, beliefs, and practices associated with being male and female. Race: category describing people who share real or perceived physical traits that society deems social significant like skin color. Ethnicity: shared cultural characteristics, such as food, language, place of origin, dress, religion, and other values. Ethnic group: a group of people that share specific cultural features. Social status: sex, gender, race, ethnicity, and social.
