Document Summary
Number words are encountered and used by young children very early. Children also encounter forward number sequences (1, 2, 3, etc. ) often, and may encounter backward number sequences as well (3, 2, 1, etc. ) Facility with (a term for the child"s knowledge of) number sequences may vary by child, but usually is much higher with forward sequences than backward ones. Facility with number words provides the basis for early arithmetical skills and strategies. Skills included in learning about numerals: identify numerals, write numerals, recognize numerals, learn about numeral sequences. Some children may have difficulty distinguishing between numerals and letters in early stages of learning. The easiest and fastest numerals for children to master are 0 to 10. When learning numerals 20 to 99, children begin to recognize the regular system used to name these numbers and can make predictions about their names on their own.
