11 views2 pages

Document Summary

Utilitarian philosophy looks at the utility, which is basically the outcome that is expected of a decision someone makes and decides the morally right course of action. This is a different form of consequentialist philosophy because you define the morality of actions from the consequences they have. This looks to maximize the benefits for the most amount of people and limit the negative consequences that may come. The goal of this test can be separated into three part of types of tests. It started with an approach valuing pleasure, but this had its problems. Eudaimonistic utilitarianism said happiness was the best test of utility, where ideal utilitarianism says that all valuable qualities can be valuable in this test, such as knowledge, friendship, or health. Utilitarianism defines some sort of ethical action as being something that fives utility and creates the most amount of good for the most amount of people.
