Document Summary

Matter is the stuff of which the universe is composed. State of a given sample of matter depends on the strength of the forces among the particles contained in the matter, the stronger the forces, the more rigid the matter. Physical properties include odor, color, volume, state, density, melting point and boiling point. Chemical properties, which refer to its ability to form a new substance. Physical changes do not affect the composition of the substance. Chemical change is when substance has changed into different substances. Cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical means. Each element is made up of a particular kind of atom. Example: wood, wine, coffee, water from the earth. Pure substance will always have the same composition. Homogeneous mixture is the same throughout like salt in water. Heterogeneous mixture contains regions that have different properties from those of other regions (example sand in water) Distillation is a separation process to make seawater into pure water.
