PSY 1305 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Belief Perseverance, Availability Heuristic, Functional Fixedness
Document Summary
Concepts involve mentally grouping objects, events, ideas, or people that are similar to simplify the way we think with little effort cognitively. Prototypes is an example of a category that develops our concepts through mental images. Boundaries between categories blur whenever we move away from the prototypes. Algorithm is a slow strategy to solving a problem by going through the options and guaranteeing that there is a solution. Heuristics is a quicker strategy to solving a problem but may not be the best solution because it"s the first idea that pops to mind. Insight is when you are suddenly think of a solution. Group think can cause problem solving error because a person may feel under pressure in a group so they conform to the first solution as to not conflict or go against the group. Social loafing: the tendency to work less in large groups because of the belief that members will take the responsibility.
