If it can"t be manipulated it is a subject variable (naturally occurring) Factor meaning independent variable - have one iv: 2 types of factors. Between subjects variable: two different groups of participants being exposed to a different level of the iv. Within subject variables: groups are made up of the same participants and are being exposed to both levels of the iv: 4 basic research designs. Experimental group & control group: between-subjects, single factor designs (looking at differences in the outcome, most researchers prefer to use more complex designs, which often produce more elaborate & more intriguing outcomes, independent group designs.
