Document Summary

Holy images are used in a lot of religions, but the focus for this section is in christianity, particularly byzantine and (eventually) catholic denominations. Image: likeness similar to original object with specific differences. Example: son of god (aka jesus) is the image of god, his begotten. Images help us remember an object or more often, a person, but do not replace that object or person (the subject, in other words) That means the creation should not be worshipped as a god or in place of god. Some people think worshipping with images is wrong or blasphemous, but the images tell stories for the people in the congregation who can"t read the scriptures or speak. These stories are ones that the common people used to remember but don"t anymore, so the images reteach and remind them. Even jesus made an image once to explain some story or parable and sent it to augarus.
