Document Summary

Section 55. 2: energy and other limiting factors control primary production in ecosystems. The other goes to rice and soil. Gross primary production (gpp): the total primary production in an ecosystem. The amount of energy from light converges to the chemical energy of organic molecules per unit time. Not all is stored as organic material because some is used. Net primary production (npp) to fuel cellular respiration. It represents the storage energy of chemical energy that will be available to consumers in the ecosystem. Gpp - the energy used by primary producers for their autotrophic respiration (r(a)) The unit is energy per unit area per unit time [j/(m^2 x yr)] Or biomass added per unit area per unit time [g/((m^2 x yr)] Npp is usually about one half of gpp. Net ecosystem production (nep): the amount of new biomass added in a given period of time. Nep = gpp - total respiration of all organisms.
