Explore the branch from cezanne to cubism, and from cubism to abstract modernism. Cezanne"s is more composed and manipulated compared to monet"s frog pond, which is more about visualising what"s there. Monet captures the transience/temporality of the moment, while cezanne"s was done over time, more deliberate. Visual rhyming between the mountains and tree branches, which parallel with the same painting treatment. Monet is about perception (impressionism is about perception) Cox: paradox of cezanne is to work on both depth and breadth, on both the spatial difference and the surface matter > ambiguity in its composition/illusion of space. Modernism > tension between depth and the flat. Cox: pasage moving from one patch of pigment to another patch of pigment, and the relation of colors create ways to move from one to another color in ways that aren"t necessarily logical. Cox: cubism is not just about cubes, but the relationship between cubes and ambiguity, and the ambiguous relationship between planes.
