Document Summary

Whatever is happening with memory can be deconstructed into two major components: Working memory (wm): contain memories that last from seconds to a few minutes. Working memories can last inde nitely if you keep thinking about them. Wm has a limited capacity of 10 items. One way to measure wm capacity is to ask someone to repeat back a list of numbers or words immediately after hearing them. Long-term memory (ltm): include memories that have been retained permanently. Info may get into ltm by a variety of pathways: Rehearsing items in wm: it"s easier to remember info, such as telephone numbers and names, that we interact with more frequently. This is what understanding is: appreciating new knowledge in relation to material already known. Storage involves some sort of structural change in the nervous system. Retrieval involves some mechanism of access to the stored memory. Newly stored memories in ltm are initially frail and may be readily disrupted.
