MCELLBI C61 Chapter Notes - Chapter 16: Visual Cortex, Lamellar Corpuscle, Dorsal Root Ganglion

19 views4 pages

Document Summary

Dendrites of somatosensory neurons terminate in the top layers of skin. Membranes of these nerve bers contain receptor proteins that respond to touches, pokes, or changes of temperature. Some nerve bers have free ends in the skin"s top layers. Others end in structures (merkel"s disks, pacinian corpuscles, meissner"s corpuscles, ru ni endings) that respond to the pressure from touch. Receptors responsive to touch and poking are based on mechanically-gated ion channels, perhaps similar to the channels on inner ear hair cells that open as the hairs bend. Receptors responsive to temperature are the same trp receptors related to the avor perceptions of spicy hot and minty cool. Cell bodies for dendrite bers are located in the dorsal root ganglia, near the spinal cord. Drg bers innervating the skin are contiguous w the axons that send signals to cns. A drg dendrite functions just like an axon, except that action potentials propagate toward the cell body instead of away from it.
