Known most commonly today as a potent psychoactive substance, but for many years, it was harvested primarily for its fiber. The strong hemp fibers were employed in the production of rope, clothes, and ship sails. Its psychoactive properties were not recognized in the us until the first third of the 20th century. Marijuana is the leafy top portion of the plant. Hashish is made from the dust of the resin that the hemp plant produces for protection from the sun and heat and for maintaining hydration. Gateway hypothesis: marijuana is the first step to using other, harder drugs o o. Idea came from the thought that to quench thirst from smoking or chewing, you would drink alcohol o. Statistical perspective: we know there is an association between marijuana and other illicit drugs. Marijuana users are statistically more likely to go on to use illicit drugs than those who are not using marijuana.
