Management of private lands in brazil is key to achieve success in mitigating climate change. Forest code: central piece of legislation regulating land use and management on private properties in brazil created in 1965. Required land owners to conserve native vegetation on their rural properties. Created a legal reserve (lr) which preserved 80% of amazon. Designated areas of permanent preservation (apps) to conserve water and soil. New fc approved in 2012 mains conservation requirement for lrs and riparian. Reduced acreage of land to be restored by forgiving lr debt of small properties; reduces restoration requirements. These losses are uneven across states and biomes and will have a large impact on biodiversity conservation and forest programs. 2012 fc introduces new mechanisms concerning fire management, forest carbon, and payments for ecosystem, which bring about ecosystem benefits. Environmental reserve quota: tradable areas with intact or regenerating native vegetation that can be used to offset lr debt. Adds monetary value to land and vegetation.
