Subjects (inhabitants of a kingdom) had no sense of identity or patriotism instead their allegiances were to a ruler or a ruling dynasty. Their ideas were influence by jacque rousseau and the new doctrine of popular self- government. Nationalism developed into the most successful and compelling of political creeds. Not all patriots are nationalists, nationalism has a doctrinal character and embodies the belief that the nation is in some way the central principle of political organization. 19"th century-period of nation building, italy became a united state in 1861 (completed with the acquisition of rome in 1870); germany unified in 1871. Nationalism in the 19"th century became the language of mass politics, made possible by the rise of education literacy and the spread of newspapers. By the end of the 19"th century though its character changed, previously as being associated with liberal and progressive movements, it later was taken up by conservative and reactionary politicians.
