Conservative ideas arose in reaction to the growing pace of change, symbolized by the. Changes brought on by industrialization led to the growth of liberalism, socialism and nationalism. While these ideologies preached reform and revolution conservativism stood in defense of the traditional. It varied as it adapted itself to existing traditions and national cultures. Uk conservatism preached a prudent willingness to change not a blind resistance to it. In continental europe where some autocratic monarchies persisted through the (cid:883)(cid:891)"th century, a more authoritarian (strong central authority imposed from above, and unquestioning obedience) form of conservatism developed which defended monarchy and rigid autocratic values. Only after wwii did all continental conservatives accept democracy and political reform. (germany and italy most notably) values. Us had not been influenced by conservatism, all parties held liberal and progressive. Only since the (cid:888)(cid:882)"s have any views of conservatism been expressed; mostly by southern democrats, and barry goldwater republican supporters in the (cid:888)(cid:882)"s.
