Chapter 21: the emergence of political islam in the middle east and north africa. During the cold war (70"s) a new political force other than the us and soviet union took center stage: militant islam. They sought to resurrect the house of islam which stretchered the atlantic shores of africa to the easternmost tip of the indonesian archipelago in asia, from central asia to the sudan. Its aim was to free islam form the influence of outside forces- communism, secularism and above all the west. 3"d of the world"s great religions to come out of the middle east. Allah spoke to mohammed in mecca, islam"s holiest city (today"s saudi arabia) Jews and christians are simply misguided muslims who lost their way. Arabs and jews both claim abraham as their ancestor, where the jews descended from his second son isaac and the arabs descend from the first son ishmael (different mothers)
