Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, summarizing and analyzing information to draw conclusions or answer questions. Data- information; fact or preposition used to draw a conclusion or make a decision. The misuse of data usually occurs when data are incorrectly obtained or analyzed. Lurking variable- another variable that causes a correlation. Data varies and within a group, there is definite variation. In statistics, when a problem is solved, there is not 100% certainty. Population- the entire group to be studied. Sample- subset of the population that is being studied. Descriptive statistic- describes the result of the sample without making any general conclusions about the population. Descriptive statistic extended to population = inferential statistic. Parameter - numerical parameter of a population. Continuous variables: discrete is a whole number (can"t have a quarter of a car) and continuous is when you can have an even smaller unit of something (time or height) A statistic is a numerical summary of a sample.
