Small improvements due to technological advances in medical care that save sick neworns. 2/3rds of deaths to liveborn infants occur within first month after birth. Low birth weight, pre term delivery, and infant mortality. These babies at higher risk of dying during first year of life than healthy weight babies. Preterm delivery and low birth weight baby rates have increased-higher in african americans. Deaths can be reduced through improvements in birth weights of newborns. Infants 3500-4500 grams at birth least likely to die within 1st year and in utero.
