Document Summary

Chapter 12: social psychology: social influence: the ways in which a person"s thoughts, feelings, and behavior can be affected by others. Seven subjects; the 6th was real, the rest were confederates. Foot-in-the-door: compliance with smaller request is secured, larger request follows. Door-in-the-face: large request comes first (usually refused) then followed by a second smaller and more reasonable request. Lowball: commitment made, cost of commitment is increased. Of those who did stop not one of them quit before 300-volts: factors that increase the likelihood of obedience: Lack of defiant role models: zimbardo"s prison study: subjects played either prisoners or guards. Prisoners were arrested, fingerprinted, dressed, and referred to by number. Guards were dressed and given control over prisoners. Members start censoring dissent as the pressure to conform increases. Mind guards try to shield the group from information that contradicts the group"s view.
