Hearing = physiological process involving vibration of sound waves on the eardrums and the firing of electrochemical impulses in the brain: this is not listening, listening requires your attention. Listening = paying close attention to, and making sense of, what we hear: we only grasp about 50% of what we think we are listening to, 24 hours after the message, we only remember 10% +60% of errors in business are due to poor listening. Appreciative listening = listening for pleasure or enjoyment: ex. Empathic listening = listening to provide emotional support for a speaker: mostly one-sided communication where listener is only listening. Comprehensive listening = listening to understand the message of a speaker. Critical listening = listening to evaluate a message for purposes of accepting or rejecting it: summarizing info, recalling facts, distinguishing main from minor points are all skills for both.
