Document Summary

Chapter 12 - focus on: minimizing your risk for diabetes. Diabetes mellitus : a group of diseases characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. Non-diabetic person: food breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, glucose is released into the bloodstream, pancreas generates a hormone called insulin. Insulin stimulates body cells to take up glucose and use it for energy. The individual"s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-making cells in the pancreas. Insulin is not produced + blood glucose levels permanently elevated. 5% of diabetic cases are type 1. Pancreas does not make sufficient insulin or body cells are resistant to insulin. Glucose is unable to enter body cells effectively. 90-95% of diabetic cases are type 2. Body weight, dietary choices, level of physical activity, sleep, and stress. Condition that involves higher than normal blood glucose levels. 15-30% of cases will eventually develop into type 2 diabetes. State of high blood glucose levels during pregnancy.
