Motives for colonization: economic (raw materials and natural resources, religious (catholicism vs. protestantism, social (population growth and inflation) English emigrants went to: ireland, west indies, north america. Chesapeake (virginia and maryland); new england, and middle colonies (ny, nj, penn) English emigrants especially those who went to the chesapeake were mostly: young, single, male, poor. Indentured servants would have their fare across the atlantic paid in full by their masters in exchange for their service. People resorted to indentured servitude because they wanted to emigrate that bad: contract written that stipulated the length of service, 5-7 years, servant supplied room and board, upon completion, servant would receive freedom dues .
