Ch 14: a new birth of freedom, 1861-1865. Republican, rose to prominence in 1858, a candidate for seat in the senate (an election he ultimately lost) Thought all blacks had the right to enjoy unalienable rights, but not in the us. Wanted to stop the expansion of slavery, not necessarily slavery itself. Won republican party"s presidential nomination and the 1860 election in part due to his dedication of preserving national unity. South carolina threatens to secede from the union, because they saw lincoln"s election as purely one for the north, and not sympathetic to the system of the south. The states of the deep south did not like the plan, upper south and northern states did. Plan failed, in large part due to lincoln. April 12, 1861, union soldiers went to fort sumter, sc to replenish the fort with supplies, confederate forces fired on them and forced them to surrender. Diseases like measles, dysenters, and malaria swept through camps.
