Allowed americans to reduce transportation costs, facilitated sale of goods, etc. Allowed for instantaneous communication using morse code (as opposed to letter writing which took months) 1790-1840, 4. 5 million people travelled west across appalachians. 1815-1821, six new states were added to the union. 3 different types of settlers moved west: small farmers/planters w/ their slaves, farm families from south who moved to ohio, indiana, illinois, new englanders moved across new york to ohio, indiana, illinois, michigan, Birth of cotton kingdom in the south had much to do with this: 1793 eli whitney invented the cotton gin (removed seeds from cotton), which unintentionally revolutionized slavery. Southern planters turned to growing cotton: slave owners and buyers moved 1 million slaves to newly established southern states. Manifest destiny came into being: perception that land was free/cheap, regardless of the native peoples that lived there. It offered americans a chance to avoid becoming structured like europe.
