AST 165 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Constellation
Document Summary
Asterism: patterns of stars that are easily remembered and visible. Constellation: region of stars w/ clear borders. Constellations include all other stars within borders around it. Ex: orion"s belt known for 3 bright belt stars; but it"s much larger bc it includes all surrounding stars within its borders. Every part of sky belongs to constellations, but the borders don"t overlap. 3 factors used to determine where something is in the sky: Meridian: imaginary line that runs north to south, passing right overhead. Zenith: point directly overhead you no matter where you are. Meridian crosses through zenith bc it runs north to south.
