Document Summary

Cancer disease caused by changes in dna. Not passed from one generation to the next. They are passed down mitotically in somatic cells. Where the cancer originates, it has a big impact on the progression of the disease. Benign can be removed without causing any further damage. Malignant if the cells can leave their tissue or origin. Metastasis when they start a secondary tumor. Alfred knudson (1971) multi-hit hypothesis several mutations occur before cell becomes cancer. He studied cancer in the eye - neuroblastoma. Has to have multiple hits in one somatic cell. When its happening repeatedly in one somatic cell, lead it to lose control of division. Kids who have inherited the mutation doesn"t mean they will develop cancer but every cell in the body already has one hit. Now the likelihood of getting the 2nd hit is more likely.
