Document Summary

Chapter 4: developing confidence: coping with your fears about public speaking. Your emotions strongly influence your ability to speak, regardless of skill. Communication apprehension: fear or anxiety associated with either real or anticipated communication encounters. Just knowing you have to give a speech (the anticipation) can induce apprehension. Shyness: general avoidance of or reluctance to engage in social interactions. Apprehensive people fear communicating with almost anyone in any kind of situation. Trait-like communication apprehension: apprehension is relatively stable in this person"s life and is part of their personality: traits are not rigid and are not always exhibited. People with low apprehension love to talk and love situations where they can meet new people. Different situations make people anxious; meetings, interviews, meeting people, asking someone out, etc. Culture has a profound impact on people"s communication apprehension. Americans, swedes, australians, chinese are in the middle. Puerto ricans, koreans, filipinos, and middle easterners are least apprehensive.
